You're right—it's not simple. But getting angry doesn't help.

It doesn't help anything besides venting anger that might otherwise be bottled up until one snaps and launches into a murderous rage. Potentially.

Many years ago, one of my teachers taught me that getting angry is, actually, a choice. If you're in line at the bank and somebody is paying their mortgage in pennies, you can choose to get mad, or choose to wait patiently. If you're stuck behind a slow driver on the road, you can choose to get mad and yell at them, or you can choose to wait patiently for an opportunity to pass. Believe me, it can be an extremely difficult choice to make. I've got three boys, and I have trouble making the choice. I wish I had made it this morning when my 11-y-o pissed me off to no end. But realizing that you are not a slave to your anger, or other emotions, is an incredibly powerful, and empowering, revelation.

Now see, I'm kind of a hybrid. I bottle up all the frustration my four teens provide me and unleash it on the slow driver camping out in the left lane.

I guess it's better to yell at somebody who can't hear you than to yell at your kids. I yell too much. But I'm working on it.
